Building Leprechaun Traps

As March approaches, excitement builds in classrooms around the world in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day. This festive holiday offers a wonderful opportunity for educators to inject some creativity and fun into their curriculum. One popular activity that can spark enthusiasm and promote critical thinking skills is building leprechaun traps. In this blog post, we'll explore how to organize and execute this engaging classroom activity, along with its educational benefits.

The idea of catching a leprechaun taps into the imagination and wonder of students, making it an ideal activity for fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. Building leprechaun traps also encourages teamwork and collaboration as students work together to design and construct their traps. Additionally, this activity provides an opportunity to integrate various subjects such as science, engineering, and writing, making it both fun and educational.

Materials Needed:

  • “How to Catch a Leprechaun” by Adam Wallace (You can also find a read-aloud on YouTube)

  • Cardboard boxes

  • Craft sticks

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Construction paper

  • Tape and glue

  • Scissors

  • Small containers, cups, or shoe boxes

  • Decorative items such as glitter, sequins, and stickers

  • Chocolate gold coins

Instructions:

  1. Read Aloud: Begin by reading the book “How to Catch a Leprechaun” to get ideas flowing for the leprechaun traps students want to construct.

  2. Plan: Provide students with time to sketch out their trap designs and brainstorm materials they will need. Encourage them to consider elements such as bait, mechanisms for trapping, and camouflage to attract the leprechauns.

  3. Build: Once students have finalized their designs, provide them with the necessary materials and let them begin building their traps. You can put students in groups or let them work independently. always put my students in groups.

  1. Test (optional): After the traps are constructed, give students the opportunity to test them out. Set up a designated area in the classroom where students can place their traps overnight in hopes of catching a leprechaun.

Now it is time for students to go somewhere. I always like to do this activity before lunch. That way the students leave and I have time to make it appear that a leprechaun has come into our classroom! You could also do it before recess, specialties, or any other time where the students leave and come back again! While the students are gone, you can turn over the furniture, mess up the traps, leave a note from the leprechaun, and leave a chocolate coin for each student at each trap. Whatever you want! Be creative!

The leprechaun traps activity is a fun and engaging way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day while promoting creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration in the classroom. By providing students with the opportunity to design, build, and test their traps, educators can tap into their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. So, gather your materials, unleash your students' imagination, and let the leprechaun trapping begin!
